Daniel Jones Breaks Silence on New York Giants Potentially Taking QB in NFL Draft
Chris Pedota / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Giants could look to select Daniel Jones successor with the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft, and potentially even trade up to do so.

Jones, recovering from suffering a torn ACL in Week 9 of the 2023 season, opened up for the first time about the possibility of general manager Joe Schoen and the Giants taking a quarterback early in the NFL Draft later this month.

Daniel Jones Addresses New York Giants’ QB Speculation

“My focus is what I’m doing here with my rehab,” Jones told reporters on the first day of the Giants’ offseason program. “Kind of the same thing with [losing] Saquon. You know, that’s the nature of our business.

“It’s a competitive league, so the best way to handle that I think is to focus on what I’m doing, focus on myself, and making sure that I’m, one, healthy, and then ready to play good football. So that’s what I can control. That’s what I can do to help myself and the team.”

It wasn’t long ago, in 2019, that Jones was the incoming rookie, selected in the top-10 to replace two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning.

For Jones, we’re about to find out just how committed New York is to their quarterback, since neither Schoen nor head coach Brian Daboll were in the building when the Giants drafted him No. 6 overall out of Duke.

New York Giants doing due diligence on Possible Daniel Jones Replacements

The Giants have put several of the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class through private workouts, as would be expected for a team in New York’s position with a top-10 pick and a quarterback on the roster who has made just one trip to the postseason.

Jones, though, is aiming to compartmentalize his focus leading into draft weekend.

“I think you can get into trouble when you try to think too much about some of those things,” Jones told reporters. “And how it all works out. Yeah, like your antenna for some of those dynamics and relationships.

“I’m just focused on what I’m doing, and that’s my rehab, getting healthy, spending time with the guys, and making sure we’re getting on the same page, and having the best spring we can. Like I said, be a better question for Joe and Dabs. I’m focused on what I have to do.”

Through his first five seasons, Jones has completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 12,512 yards with 62 touchdowns to 40 interceptions but has guided the Giants to just one winning season.

Looking ahead to this summer, presuming Jones is back on the field and fully recovered from offseason surgery to repair his injured knee, the 26-year-old offered just three words when asked if he believes he’s the Giants’ best option for 2024.

“I do,” Jones said. “Yes.”
